Bill Cosby has been arraigned on felony aggravated indecent assault. The man once known as "America's Favorite Father" showed up at the courthouse in Elkins Park, PA, emerged from a Chevy SUV with tinted windows dressed in a grey-and-white hooded sweater, and walked past the media crush into the courthouse, shaking his head from side to side, presumably in response to requests for comment. He was walking with a cane and slipped slightly at some point during the short walk from the vehicle to the entrance of the courthouse. He was officially charged with second-degree aggravated indecent assault, a felony.
Montgomery County Assistant District Attorney Kevin R. Steele defined the act as “penetration” without the consent of his victim, former Temple University employee Andrea Constand. If convicted, Cosby could get five to 10 years in prison, and up to a $25,000 fine. Cosby did not enter a plea, surrendered his passport and immediately posted one million dollars bail. A preliminary hearing on the case has been set for January 16, 2016 at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
There was no discussion in court regarding the amount of the bail, so it may have been pre-negotiated. The amount of the bail is considered very high for this type of crime, but may be a reflection of his wealth and also the fact Cosby is considered a flight risk, which is why he was required to turn over his passport.
